Kemp's Ridley is a critically endangered species of sea turtle. It is one of two living species in the genus Lepidochelys, the other one being L. olivacea, the Olive Ridley. It is also the rarest sea turtle. Kemp's Ridley
Kemp's Ridley sea turtles generally prefer warm waters but are known to inhabit the waters as far north as New Jersey, but return to the Gulf of Mexico. Almost all females return each year to a single beach in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas (Rancho Nuevo) to lay their eggs. In the past their numbers were severely depleted through hunting, but today major threats include loss of habitat, pollution, and entanglement in fishing/shrimping nets.

Two experienced defense contractors, both based in San Diego, are leading projects. General Atomics will lead a team of 18 university and industrial partners in a three-year project supported by a $43 million from DARPA. Science Applications International Corporation received a $25 million contract for all phases of an algae program involving industrial and academic organizations from all over the U.S. including; Georgia, Florida, Hawaii and Texas.
DARPA developed ARPANET in 1969 which led to the Internet. DARPA also assisted in research for the development of GPS technology. DARPA's Vulture program is developing an unmanned aircraft capable of remaining on-station uninterrupted for over five years.
