Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA)
SOPA is an effort to combat online piracy and illegal downloads of movies and music.
The bill serves as a companion to the Senate PROTECT IP bill, introduced in the spring.
Both measures would give the Feds broad new powers to shut down websites accused of
posting content that infringes on the rights of the intellectual copyright holder. The key
supporters of the bill include the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the
U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Google, Facebook, Twitter and Zynga are in opposition.
